It's official! Gov. Rod Blagojevich (Democrat-Illinois) is not going anywhere soon.
He held a press conference today in which he vehemently denied doing anything wrong, said that he would not resign, and -- to help push this scandal even more over-the-top -- he quoted Rudyard Kipling's famous poem If.
Hearing Blagojevich cite Kipling's poem for inspiration, I couldn't help but think about Linday Anderson's 1969 film, If...
The movie, of course, ended quite memorably with Malcolm McDowell gunning down the faculty and students at an English boy's school. It's hard not to feel that Blagojevich is essentially trying to do the same thing to the Illinois Democratic Party.
Seeing as how Blagojevich refuses to resign and the Illinois Supreme Court recently refused to declare him to be disabled, I assume this would mean that the governor can still appoint anyone he wants to fill Barack Obama's empty senate seat.
His task now would seem to be finding an Illinois Democrat who would actually be stupid enough to actually allow themsleves to be publicly identified as his appointee.
Is Carol Moseley-Braun busy? Or how about Alan Dixon? Last I heard Adlai Stevenson III was still alive...
Blagojevich's best bet might be to cross party lines and appoint a Republican to the seat. After all, the average American voter is always whining about how we need more bipartisan cooperation. Maybe Blagojevich can reinvent himself as the new John McCain.
I'm sure former Governor James Thompson needs the job. However, perhaps the best Republican that Blagojevich could pick to move from Illinois up to Washington, D.C. would be U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald.
See? For every problem, there is a solution.
